Series name: PriPara
Canon notes: OU; post-episode 140 (end of season 3)
Species: Human
History:
Fuwari’s world is a cartoony version of modern-day Earth. Many place names have the letter “P” inserted into them somewhere, and throughout history, all girls have received magic tickets that let them visit a virtual idol theme park called PriPara. The laws of physics also pretty much don’t apply.
Fuwari specifically grows up in the Palps mountain range. She’s raised by her grandfather and spends most of her time running barefoot through the fields with all the animals, who are her only friends.
One day, however, she encounters a princelike movie star, Hibiki. Both Fuwari and Hibiki are smitten with each other at first sight, and Hibiki invites Fuwari to compete in an idol tournament being held at the Parajuku PriPara in Japan as a “Princess candidate”. Flattered, Fuwari accepts. Acting like a Princess doesn’t suit her, however, as it involves putting on too many airs, so Fuwari ends up backing out of her candidacy. Hibiki permits her to stay in Parajuku, as Fuwari has already made friends there and wishes to stay.
Fuwari continues to hang out with her new human friends, although she feels bad that she doesn’t really understand Hibiki, for whom she still has feelings. When a mysterious thief calling themselves Phantom Thief Genius appears in PriPara, Fuwari becomes a “PriPara Nurse” to back up the police force that forms in response. (The PriPara Nurses tend to achieve absolutely nothing, but they try.) Phantom Thief Genius is ultimately revealed to be Hibiki, and Fuwari becomes even more confused: she really has no idea what’s going on with the person she cares about.
Hibiki enters PriPara and declares that she’s both the Phantom Thief and a woman. This is a terrible shock to Fuwari, who’s bedridden by the news. She’s dealt a further wound when she encounters Hibiki again and Hibiki tells her that their entire relationship had all been a lie. To recover from the emotional pain, which is also affecting her physically, Fuwari heads back to Palps.
Back home, Fuwari recovers, and reassesses everything that had happened with Hibiki. She discovers, upon reviewing her memories, that while much of Hibiki’s flattery had been lies, Hibiki had been lonely and she had had feelings for Fuwari. Fuwari therefore heads right on back to Parajuku, where she learns the truth about Hibiki’s past: the people Hibiki had thought were her friends had all only been interested in her money, so Hibiki came to the conclusion that the whole world itself was nothing but lies.
Fuwari then takes it upon herself to dress up like “Phantom Thief Natural” and inform Hibiki that she’s arrived to steal Hibiki’s sadness - she’s going to be Hibiki’s friend whether Hibiki wants her to or not. Hibiki spurns this offer, but after time and a lot of really ridiculous shenanigans involving the universe literally breaking because Hibiki ruins everything, Hibiki realizes she reciprocates Fuwari’s feelings. Fuwari saves Hibiki’s life (again, shenanigans), Hibiki saves Fuwari’s right back, and they end up leaving for “PriParis” together, because Fuwari will worry about Hibiki otherwise.
Five months later, Fuwari and Hibiki return to Parajuku along with another mutual friend, Falulu, to try and form a three-idol team to compete in another, even bigger, idol tournament. Hibiki struggles with the team forming ceremony, but manages to work around it with Fuwari and Falulu’s support, and the three grow even closer as a result. They spend the rest of the show just happily hanging out together - though they lose in the semifinals, it’s with no regrets, and they’re last seen enjoying each other’s company in PriParis. Fuwari plays a support role throughout, but does seem to have found happiness now that Hibiki is being more honest about her feelings.
More honest is still not completely honest, however, and Falulu is also a bit of an odd duck. Fuwari has her work cut out for her.
Personality:
Fuwari is kind, sympathetic, charismatic, and sweet, though she’s also self-effacing and cries easily. Since she grew up around animals instead of people, she never feels nervous around other species - to her, all animals are friends! She also has very few notions of what is and isn’t appropriate behavior (though she’s always polite), prefers going barefoot, and sleeps on the floor because mattresses are too soft for her. Fuwari is a “natural-type idol”, and it shows.
Fuwari is naive and unfailingly caring. She seems to have a special soft spot for people others might consider lost causes (both Hibiki and her PriPara manager, Toriko, fall into this category), because she’s always able to see something redeeming about them. Her “refreshing” attitude also apparently makes her soothing to be around, especially for wild animals; she’s seen attracting and charming them just by existing.
Fuwari’s willingness to believe the best of everyone can make her gullible when distracted, but she’s also extremely perceptive - she has excellent eyesight, and can usually tell when people or animals are hurting, both physically and mentally. Although she remains slightly starstruck by modern, high-society life, when Fuwari’s on top of her game, it’s impossible to lie to her without being called out. She develops a “truth” motif, in fact, to contrast to Hibiki’s “lies”; “truthfully, truly” becomes her catchphrase, in addition to speaking animal language and yodeling (…the Palps, okay).
Being such a compassionate person has its downsides, though. Fuwari is both too humble and extremely sentimental. She consistently puts others’ needs before her own and speaks of herself very modestly, as if she can’t believe a mere country girl from the Palps could ever have achieved the happiness and acclaim she’s received as a PriPara idol. Thinking with her heart instead of her head causes Fuwari to blame herself for things that aren’t her fault. She also cries easily. And, although her reasons for doing so remain unclear, she does have a tendency to mimic Hibiki’s behavior (which, even though it works, is never a good idea) when she really wants to get through to her friend.
Although she normally has a smile on her face, Fuwari is also a fretter. She often worries about her friends, especially since she tends to befriend difficult people, and though irritating her seems impossible, she does get exasperated at times. Feeling responsible for someone else’s pain, however, takes the wind out of her sails immediately. She also doesn’t realize that her ease with animals can be really offputting.
Despite her forgiving tendencies, though, Fuwari isn’t necessarily a pushover. She’s single-minded when she’s decided to look after someone, and the same relaxing attitude that makes her soothing for Hibiki to be around helps her be one of the only people who can get away with scolding her “princely” friend. And, while her personal story arc is tied up in Hibiki’s, that doesn’t mean she isn’t her own whole, complete person without Hibiki: she turned down a chance to be Hibiki’s Princess in favor of remaining herself, Fuwari from the Palps. No matter where she goes, that’s who she’ll be!
She just never expected to end up in space.
Abilities:
🍀 Fuwari can communicate with animals! It’s unclear whether she really can speak their language or if this is an offshoot of her perceptiveness, but all animals understand her. And love her. She can tame any wild beast just by smiling at them.
🍀 Her eyesight is really good - not X-ray vision, but better than a normal human’s. If she concentrates, she can tell when people are lying. (I will always leave whether or not this is in effect up to the other person in the thread, though.)
🍀 Fuwari can cook and perform basic first aid. Most of the latter, however, involves making herbal remedies from scratch.
🍀 She’s a talented singer, with a soothing voice.
🍀 Since PriPara is a really cartoony show, all characters have hammerspace access for humorous props. I’d like to say Fuwari has the following items available to her:
— Her PriTickets & Rosette Pact (goofy-looking video phone), which are useless to her outside of her world
— A single cheese wheel, though once she hands out all the cheese, it’ll be gone
— Some basic medicinal herbs, as well as a stone for grinding them (see note about cheese for herb availability)
— A leek and a mitten, for challenging people to duels (no, really)
🍀 Fuwari has also been shown to be able to change in and out of her PriPara Nurse and Phantom Thief Natural costumes at will. I’d like her to maintain access to these two outfits, though she’ll only use them in situations that might require a nurse or, god forbid, the world’s least effective phantom thief. Neither outfit comes with weapons.
